This is a virtual celebration for NIU Women's Studies Program's 30th anniversary. We hope you will share your WOMS related stories, memories, and pictures on this site.
Thank you for setting up our virtual anniversary celebration! I hope that many of our friends and alums will join us here, regardless of how far they are from Dekalb!
Gee, that's me in the middle of the picture with the dark jumper on! Many moons ago! I was the first Women's Studies major (I had to contract it)and I remember Wirtz House well. It was our little oasis in the middle of campus. I was so sad to hear that it was demolished some years ago....
I was also a TA for the WS program my first year of grad school, along with Kathy (I think her last name was Ford). We'd sit at our desk and look out over the Student Center quad and watch all the people running around below. It was lovely! We also had receptions for the feminist speakers who came to NIU, either before dinner or after they spoke. Can't remember all of them...As far as speakers go, I especially remember Nikki Giovanni and Sarah Weddington (atty. for Roe v. Wade), because I was also on the NIU Speakers Committee and I chose them to come to NIU! I also had to be their "buddy" for the day and entertain them in the hours before dinner--what a chore! ha ha. Nikki Giovanni's poetry reading was a sellout (though it was free)...people were standing outside the room in the Student Center--and not just women! It was crazy! :-)
These images are really neat! I'd love to hear from someone who was part of WOMS when it was housed in the Wirtz House.
